Kitty and the Kowalskis is/was a female-fronted punk rock band
from New York, NY. The band endured many line-up changes, over the
years, but, at its core, is founding member Lindsey Anderson (aka
Kitty Kowalski). Kitty and the Kowalskis began in 1994 as Killer
Kowalski. They opened for Iggy Pop in 1995, and released their
debut 7inch in 1996. But, in 1997, professional wrestler Killer
Kowalski forced them to legally change their name to The
Kowalskis.

Their debut album, All Hopped Up on Goofballs, was released in
1999, after Kittys club, Coney Island High (which she co-owned),
closed.

Combining jagged, roaring guitars and stop-start dynamics with melodic pop hooks, intertwining male-female harmonies, and evocative, cryptic lyrics, the Pixies were one of the most influential American alternative rock bands of the late ’80s. the Pixies weren’t accomplished musicians – Black Francis wailed and bashed out chords while Joey Santiago’s lead guitar squealed out spirals of noise. But the bandmembers were inventive, rabid rock fans who turned conventions inside out, melding punk and indie guitar rock, classic pop, surf rock, and stadium-sized riffs with singer/guitarist Black Francis’ bizarre, fragmented lyrics about space, religion, sex, mutilation, and pop culture; while the meaning of his lyrics may have been impenetrable, the music was direct and forceful.

  Their first collection of new music since 2008′s ambitious, electro-rock-studded Fasciinatiion, Doom Abuse finds the venerable Omaha post-punk-dance-metal-pop hybrid speaking a language familiar to anybody who has followed them since their 1995 Conor Oberst-era inception. Helped along by the meaty first single “Help in the Head,” the Faint are as dissatisfied as ever with society, but they don’t let the permeable injustices of the world get in the way of having a good time musically, and while the 12 cuts that make up their appropriately titled sixth long-player are still raging against the machine, they do so with the resigned wisdom, or work ethic, of age. Sometimes, all of the sticking it to the man can feel a little too on the nose, as is the case with the relentless yet redundant “Dress Code” and “Loss of Head,” but there are enough dyed-in-the-wool, Faint-astic crowd-pleasers like “Animal Needs,” “Unseen Hand,” and “Your Stranger” to goad a pit into a proper feeding frenzy. The band steps off of the main floor to flex its window dancing abilities on the dense, retro-new wave, faux-leather pants-ripper “Mental Radio,” and the frenetic “Salt My Doom” tears the roof off of the joint while simultaneously peppering it with thick, Gary Numan-inspired blasts of melodic synth, but it’s the big, bold, boozy, and surprisingly beautiful closer “Damage Control” that offers up the most concise snapshot of the band in 2014. Equal parts whimsical and despondent, it’s Disintegration-era Cure wearing an Imagine Dragons hoodie that’s trying to have an LCD Soundsystem, “All My Friends” moment, and while the Faint don’t quite pull it off, they’re all the better for trying.

British pop-punk band You Me at Six made their album debut in 2007 and rose to Top Five success in 2010 with their second effort. Founded in 2004 in Weybridge, Surrey, the band is comprised of Josh Franceschi (vocals), Max Helyer (guitar), Chris Miller (guitar), Matt Barnes (bass), and Dan Flint (drums). They made their recording debut with We Know What It Means to Be Alone (2006), a four-track EP that was followed by another, Untitled 4 Track EP (2007). You Me at Six subsequently made their full-length album debut with Take Off Your Colours (2007) on Slam Dunk Records in the United Kingdom and Epitaph Records in the United States. Produced by Matty O’Grady and John Mitchell, Take Off Your Colours reached number 25 on the U.K. albums chart and spawned the hit singles “Save It for the Bedroom,” “Finders Keepers,” and “Kiss and Tell.” Thanks in part to heavy touring, including a performance at the 2007 Slam Dunk Festival, the popularity of You Me at Six grew steadily in the wake of their album debut and earned them a nomination for Best British Band at the 2008 and 2009 Kerrang! Awards. Working once again with producers O’Grady and Mitchell, You Me at Six released their second album, Hold Me Down (2010), on Virgin Records in the U.K. and Epitaph Records in the U.S. Featuring the singles “Underdog” and “Liquid Confidence,” Hold Me Down reached the Top Five of the U.K. albums chart.

It’s impossible to know where to start here – and the gorgeous 72 book that comes with the package offers an almost overwhelming wealth of information – a rare interview with elusive label-founder Daniel Miller, dozens of newspaper clippings, odd artefacts, record sleeves, posters and several essays – charting the immense legacy of one of the most successful and interesting independent record labels of all time with a startling attention to detail. The collection starts at the very beginning with Daniel Miller’s own work under “The Normal” moniker, the brilliant “Warm Leatherette” and “T.V.O.D.” setting the scene for a chain of events that by the early eighties had given this accidental record company two multi-platinum selling artists (Depeche Mode and Yazzoo), despite the fact that it never let go of its uncompromising aesthetic and insistence on fearless sonic evolution. Back in 1978 the idea of creating a record label that would specialise in electronic music was an absurd notion – guitars were the order of the day and the punk scene had little appetite for kids with synths. It’s impossible to know where to start here – and the gorgeous 72 book that comes with the package offers an almost overwhelming wealth of information – a rare interview with elusive label-founder Daniel Miller, dozens of newspaper clippings, odd artefacts, record sleeves, posters and several essays – charting the immense legacy of one of the most successful and interesting independent record labels of all time with a startling attention to detail. The collection starts at the very beginning with Daniel Miller’s own work under “The Normal” moniker, the brilliant “Warm Leatherette” and “T.V.O.D.” setting the scene for a chain of events that by the early eighties had given this accidental record company two multi-platinum selling artists (Depeche Mode and Yazzoo), despite the fact that it never let go of its uncompromising aesthetic and insistence on fearless sonic evolution. Back in 1978 the idea of creating a record label that would specialise in electronic music was an absurd notion – guitars were the order of the day and the punk scene had little appetite for kids with synths. With their emo-punk songwriting, theatrical vocals, and neo-goth appearance, My Chemical Romance rose from the East Coast underground to the forefront of modern rock during the early 2000s. In keeping with the tragic element of the group’s best-known singles — including “Helena,” “I’m Not OK (I Promise),” and “Welcome to the Black Parade” — My Chemical Romance has roots in catastrophe, as frontman Gerard Way decided to form the band after watching the World Trade Center collapse on September 11, 2001. Drummer Matt Pelissier joined one week later, guitarist Ray Toro climbed aboard soon after, and the quintet’s ranks solidified with the addition of bassist Mikey Way (Gerard’s younger brother) and guitarist Frank Iero. With their lineup in place, the bandmates began touring and making plans for an album.

Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Fireworks are a pop-punk band whose music fuses an energetic, guitar-driven attack with tuneful melodies and personal lyrics. Formed in 2005 in Metro Detroit, Fireworks features David Mackinder on lead vocals, Brett Jones on lead guitar, Chris Mojan on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Kyle O’Neil on bass, and Tymm Rengers on drums. The year they formed, Fireworks cut a demo called Can’t Hardly Wait, and in 2006 they made their official recorded debut with a six-song EP, We Are Everywhere, released by the indie label Run for Cover Records. Fireworks hit the road hard in support, sharing stages with the likes of Set Your Goals, Valencia, and Strung Out, as well as appearing at the Vans Warped Tour. In 2009, Fireworks signed with Triple Crown Records and released their first full-length album, All I Have to Offer You Is My Own Confusion. The album was produced by Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory, who would tour with Fireworks, as did Saves the Day, H20, and Four Year Strong. In 2011, Fireworks returned with their second album, Gospel, and lots more touring followed, including visits to Europe and Australia. In March 2014, Fireworks dropped their third full-length, Oh, Common Life, and booked a U.S. tour in support with the Wonder Years, Real Friends, Citizen, and Modern Baseball.
